South Africa: Flood survivors endure thirst, trauma and disease

Following devastating flash floods on 11 April, the scale of damage to water, sanitation and sewage treatment systems in KwaZulu-Natal’s eThekwini Municipality is now clear.

To mitigate outbreaks of water-borne diseases, MSF mobile medical teams are consulting daily in the many halls, churches, tents and schools that serve as temporary shelters. These teams are supported by four MSF health promoters who walk the surrounding communities sharing information about water quality issues and risks, and connecting individuals left traumatised by the floods to MSF counsellors.

Ukraine: Transporting patients on the medical train

On the morning of Friday 1 April, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) finalised our first medical train transfer of patients in Ukraine.

Nine patients in serious but stable condition were transferred from a hospital in Zaporizhzhia, in the southeast of the country, to major referral hospitals in Lviv, on a dedicated medical 2-carriage train that MSF has developed together with the Ukrainian Railways. The patients were accompanied by a team of nine MSF medical staff.

Libya: MSF helps diagnose and treat patients with tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious global public health concern and one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide. Rates of TB in Libya are on the rise, linked to an apparent lack of knowledge and awareness in the country about this health issue, which often leads to late detection and treatment. 

On World Tuberculosis Day, we look at one of our many projects focusing on TB care—a capacity building project to improve tuberculosis care in Libya, with special consideration for drug-resistant tuberculosis.
